I've run into that a couple places. The first one being War on Our Doorstep: The Unknown Campaign on North America's West Coast by Brendan Coyle, which my dad read, and I keep meaning to get to.

The second one was that I wondered if there was a black battalion of paratroopers, and there was! But they stayed in the states and worked as smokejumpers all through the war because of the worry of those damn balloons.
