The Pacific - Edward Allison Jones

I'm currently pondering what to do about Eddie's backstory(s), since he's from three different states depending on if you go with Sledge, Burgin or actual historical records, and the actor's accent wobbles between generic Southern and Australian.

So far I've been sticking with the West Virginia thing as per Sledge, but am contemplating the benefits of rural Maryland, just to shake things up. I'm finding that I'm somewhat pulling away from the fanon for them, but I'm not sure where to take it, or just to do what the heck I want, because there are like 20 complete fic for them, and honestly...

Do people from Maryland have a Southern accent?

(this is several books after my last complaint about not having enough grounding)

And because that's boring, here's a bit of Andy/Eddie from early in their relationship.

Finally, Hillbilly threw up his hands and turned back to Andy. He was grimacing with distaste, and Andy noticed, of all things, the hint of a blush on his cheeks. "I'm gonna goddamn skin that son of a bitch," Hillbilly snarled, only belatedly adding, "sir."

"Problem?" Andy asked.

Hillbilly sighed. "I asked Matheson to book us rooms, like you said. Musta done it after he'd had a few: he reserved one for me, and forgot all about you, sir."

"And now with half the division in town, there's nothing free," Andy concluded.

"That's about the size of it." Hillbilly looked so woebegone he might have just confessed to killing Andy's dog, not failing to secure them a billet. "You can take the one, room, of course, sir. I'll..." he shrugged faintly, clearly not having thought as far ahead as where he might sleep when Andy took his room.

"No, no," Andy protested, "This is your party, Lieutenant." He emphasised the last word, reminding Hillbilly that they'd been toasting his new gold bars and calling each other by rank not half half an hour ago.

"Suppose we could go back to camp," Hillbilly suggested without enthusiasm.

Andy already knew the time, but made a show of checking his watch anyway. "I expect we've missed the train," he said. To forestall another apology, he clapped Hillbilly on the shoulder and said bracingly: "Come on, Hillbilly, I'm sure two marines used to sleeping rough can fit in one bunk just fine."

"I can sleep on the floor, sir," Hillbilly offered.

"No, you cannot."

Andy said, and then swept Hillbilly up in his strong arms~

I really love this snippet and can't wait to see this piece in full when it's done. Hillbilly having a minor conniption over their billet situation not being just so is very charming, as is Andy's steady patience and general impenetrable aura of amiability.

Very excited for moooooore~

Having known several people from the Maryland area while I was living in Georgia, I can say with some confidence that their accents landed nearer that traditional Baltimore accent than a truly Southern accent, if that's helpful in any way.

As far as pulling away from the popular fanon, I think that's totally legit. Do it all the time myself, and besides, like you said, there are only like 20 fic for Andy and Eddie as it stands and I can't imagine they're all exceptionally thoroughly researched so I think you have more than enough plausible deniability in your back pocket to afford yourself some wiggle room vis-á-vis background.

IDK if I can do a Baltimore accent, so only moderately, but now I'm thinking of Captain Britain, where one of his power-side effects was you always heard him speaking in your home region's accent. Maybe Hillbilly was just so goshdarn nice that everyone sort of wanted to claim him.

Well, the 20 fic are what there is of finished period fic in English, so they're all pulling from the same set of research I am, plus the Peleliu book I haven't read yet, and maybe the Hugh Ambrose one. It's more the run they take with the same info that differs.

Winnix awkward encounter on a train

Someone mentioned this project some days ago, and also finishing my exchange fic is giving me headaches, so here's a snippet of a more or less just started train!fic for the LLSS prompt "They have a one night stand at the end of OCS because they don't think they'll see each other ever again. Imagine their surprise when they're both assigned to Toccoa, and to the same platoon."

Behold the awkwardness!

“Oh,” Dick said softly, surprise choking his voice. A shot of blood immediately lit his face up like a bulb--damn the man's albino complexion.

“Well, look at that,” Nix said after a strained second. “I didn't see you get on the train. Did you board in Philly, or--?”

“Greenville. I came straight from--”

“Ah, from Croft. Yeah, I remember.”

“Yeah.”

“Not from home?”

“I didn't have the time. You?”

“Me?”

“You come from home?”

“Oh--oh, yeah. I do.”

Back to his usual paleness, Dick looked like a man who'd just been delivered a spot of bad news. Nix looked away, resisting the urge to stick two fingers inside the collar of his shirt, which suddenly felt too tight, and took an eager drag from his cigarette.
