Date: 06/01/2020 21:11 (UTC)Sometimes people with addictions aren't really ready to recover, and when they're in this sort of messy stage, they're portrayed as being toxic and having no real value. Like they're not worth loving. Winnix fic has been SUCH A DELIGHT because in most, Nix gets unconditional love by a pure and loving man.
The longfic that deals with these themes has emotionally gutted/but also uplifted me in ways that seem weird to say in comments on fics. It's weird to tell somebody that they helped you feel valid and worth loving, that's a bit too personal. So most of the time, I just say 'loved this!' or something. But they actually mean soooo much to me and I reread them a lot.
I've reread jouissant's series like 4 times last summer. The parts where Dick is going to Korea and Nix develops a relationship with his daughter especially. Recovery is super hard, so this unfinished fic I'm sure everyone has read really means a lot to me. The Earth Below My Feet series, which I believe is ongoing?, has also touched on these themes, and seems to touch on them more and more. And I've reread the post-war dreaming series a few times too. Nixon trying so hard to be the person that the man he loves needs is so inspiring?? Amazing happy ending, A+.
Anyway, I've never read any actual novels that deal with the theme of addictions while not vilifying the addict. So, thanks for providing this service for me, fandom!
(Also, I see this as positive, but maybe it's not?)

Date: 06/01/2020 22:29 (UTC)I found this fandom when I was majorly depressed a couple years ago, and reading and writing it, especially writing Post-War Dreaming and some of the other long fic REALLY was a balm for my soul. Like, something about these guys, I don't know man.
I id a lot more with Dick's repression, but it's sort of the same. Like that Babylon 5 Quote: "Mostly, though, I think it gave us hope that there can always be new beginnings, even for people like us."
