Whereas Ep 1 was about backstory and buildup, there's no shortage of action and tension in Ep 2. The sheer luck of survival vs death gets made very clear as planes go down and paratroopers jump (and I can't imagine how some didn't get hit by planes coming up behind them in that chaos).

It's also pretty obvious what a disaster the following events could have been without someone well suited to lead like Winters. Interesting to see a variety of familiar faces popping up in the episode (although Neal McDonough already showed up, which amused me). The flubs, the chaos, the training paying off, were all interesting to see. I was definitely hooked by the end of this episode and wanting to see where things went.

I KNOW RIGHT!? Seeing that scene puts an absolute heebie in my jeebies because there was such a narrow margin of success the guys had to hit to make it safely to the ground. The book that the series is based on and several of the memoirs go into detail about a view of those narf-ups and it's harrowing, to say the least.

It's also pretty obvious what a disaster the following events could have been without someone well suited to lead like Winters.

muccamukk brought up a good point when we were talking about it, that the post-landing scene in particular is a moment when we really get to see Dick's leadership skills shine. He takes a (mostly) unknown private under his wing, keeps the kid calm, corrals his men (at least, the ones he can find), and successfully accomplishes some really difficult objectives without the guidance of a direct superior officer and missing basically all his gear to boot. That level of competence is nice to see.

I also love that we get another taste or two of Dick's scathingly dry sense of humor, which is one of my favorite personality traits of his.

Interesting to see a variety of familiar faces popping up in the episode (although Neal McDonough already showed up, which amused me).

Lol, seriously. By this point in the show I was like, "Okay so this is just going to be a rotating who's-who of 'Hey I Think I Know That Guy From Somewhere,' huh?"

I love Neal McDonough as DumDum Dugan and I was delighted to see him in another, more technically accurate period piece~

That level of competence is nice to see.

Definitely. I mean, I have a competence kink to begin with, but also given that we have been presented in Ep 1 with clear evidence that it's not a given, and also that the whole drop was more chaotic and disastrous than was even expected, I think it's the viewer as well as the men who need to get the sense that someone's got it together.

Yes, I like a dry sense of humor as well.

'Hey I Think I Know That Guy From Somewhere,' huh?

Although this cast is a mixed American/Brit one, we always experience that when watching British TV. We have the joke that there are only 20 actors in all of Britain so we keep seeing them appear in different things.

Yes, I thought McDonough was such a good choice for that role (small though it has been) so it was an entertaining surprise to see that this role probably cinched that one for him.

Heh, it seemed appropriate for the episode's events :D
