IT'S DONE! A little over two years after I started it, I present to you my finished Winnix series. It's a long slow burn exploration of Dick's and Nix's relationship starting from the last day of OCS. It is heavily based on both canon and books tangential to the canon (memoirs and such) and it goes rather heavy on the whole "missing scene" concept.
You might like it if you are into: mutual pining, a Dick who knows what he wants, a Nix who has no friggin' clue, a healthy dose of self-hate, the slowest burn that ever burned, (quite a lot of) explicit sex.
Steer clear if you don't like: angst, addiction, people who love each other being mean to each other, people unable to communicate their feelings.
All parts:
1. The Earth Below My Feet (Lessons in Parachuting for the Troubled Mind)
Part of him knew that it would always be like this with Nix, the constant feeling of being on edge, missing the earth below his feet. Perhaps he’d touch the ground safe and sound this time, both legs intact, but there would be another jump and another and another, and he would never know which jump would be the one to break his neck.
Then again, his mother had seen right through him with the whole paratrooper thing: forget the money, forget the glory, forget being with the best of the best. Deep down, he had a reckless streak.
2. Lend Me Your Heart (And I’ll Just Let You Fall)
And Nix knew, he knew that this wasn’t about him, that others had seen Dick like this and anyway, even shackled to a pillory in the middle of the town square Dick’s dignity wouldn’t waver for a second. Still Nix was allowed to see Dick in this position, and for all his adventurous past he couldn’t make heads nor tails of it--the pure, clean lack of shame of it all.
3. These Days of Dust
Nix believed in luck, and most days he'd call himself a lucky man. After all, luck had saved his life and got him Dick Winters.
That didn't mean that he was going to stroll into combat with a pierced helmet or believe that Dick would tag along indefinitely just because of Nix's pretty eyes.
4. In the Quiet, in the Crowd
“Let's go to mine,” Nix murmured, hand sliding up to cup around Dick's shoulder.
It was so fresh, so careless, the way he'd said that, like it was just a matter of choosing yours or mine. Like they were anywhere else but in the middle of a combat theater, where there was no such thing as mine or yours, because anything that belonged to either of them was thousands of miles away.
5. The Ghosts That We Knew
“I’m making it back to Aldbourne to look up a certain young lady,” Nix had announced, producing Dick’s pass like a magician. “You, my friend, are headed to Paris.”
6. Found Wanting
“Fuck’s sake, man,” Nix muttered, his tone not nearly as sulky as his words. He turned his chin back over his shoulder, eyes focusing on Dick’s mouth with a degree of purpose. “Either let me sleep or make it worth my while.”
7. Tumble Homeward, Homeward
His mind wandered towards thoughts of home—not the one he came from, but a new one, a farm with a stretch of land and maybe a dog and a dark-haired head that would turn to greet him, squinting against the sun with a familiar, handsome smile on his lips.
Enjoy!
