How do you pin down your POV?

Alright, so. I'm getting ready to dig into my fill for the ddsherman exchange—which I am so excited about, seriously—and while I have my concept pretty well thought through, I'm having trouble pinning down which character POV I want to do it in. Obviously I can't give many details, given the nature of the project, but I'm curious if y'all have any tricks for deciding on character POV when one doesn't immediately rise to the top? Usually when I'm getting started on a story there's a certain angle that will feel right, but this one is tempting me from a few different angles and I don't want to let my indecision trip up whatever momentum I may be able to get going. All thoughts and advice are appreciated. :)

Usually a POV just seems right, but there have been a few times that I started writing from one POV, found it wasn't working, switched to the other POV and it was much better. So I guess I'd say trial and error, which isn't very helpful :D

In one fic for another fandom, I knew from the beginning that I wanted to use the POVs of both main characters, so each section changed POV (and I gave each section its own chapter for clarity). Maybe alternating POVs would work for your fic too?

I'm with Tookish on this. Sometimes changing POV is what does the trick. Personally I'm a big fan of alternating POVs.

Trial and error is basically what I'm foreseeing, lol. ;P

Alternating POVs is definitely another option, as you and arwen88 have said. I always get weird with alternating POVs, though. Like I get super caught up in whether it's balanced between the two perspectives, so idk. Plus it's harder for me to maintain a consistent character voice when jumping back and forth like that, but who knows! Maybe I'll try it and that will totally solve the problem, lol.

I usually pick PoV of the person who knows the least, if that makes sense. So then part of the story is them finding out. Though PoV of the person keeping the secret is also fun, but generally I tend to like the almost outsider PoV on the other person's issues.

That makes a lot of sense! I guess I could try figuring out what I feel like exploring with the story, too. Like, both characters are inhabiting the same set of narrative actions but one angle would allow for exploration of like [subject A redacted] while the other would probably naturally lean more toward [subject B redacted], y'know?

That makes sense to me. At which point, I guess it's which very important social issue to you want to explore through smut?

I'm currently working on the fic for the spicy event and I'm wondering if I should stop the porn at the first round or if I should go on. When is porn enough porn? Is there something like too much porn?

Enough porn that you feel the story you're telling is complete?

It's a sex pollen, so uhm. I'm not really sure if I should just go with them doing a round and leaving the readers to surmise it mostly goes on like that or if I should take it up until the moment they finally get sane again.

I think usually I fade to black after the first couple rounds. It's enough to get the idea "And they banged a lot!" after. I think ending with the impression that this carries on for some time and skipping to the morning after is fine.

I second this. Sex pollen is hard because it could just be a 15K fuckfest but I think having just enough porn to convey "no really, they got it on A LOT" and then moving on to the next thing is the way to go in that sort of story.

Character Voice with minimal canon.

I'm trying to pin down Andy/Eddie voices for my Spicy Advent fic, and it's been really tricky because I'm setting it after the war, so they're ALREADY somewhat different from what they are in canon, and we don't get much canon on them in the first place.

Well then you're free to twinkle with their voices in a way you think they would change in time, right?

I just want to do it in a way that feels recognisable and authentic to my characters (is writing porn, BUT STILL!)

But I'm with Arwy, you have a lot of room to play there so I kind of feel like you can't go wrong. Though I guess, depending on whether it's set immediately after the war or if it takes place months/years later, that might change how they are? *is unhelpful, but enthusiastic about new fic*

(At some point I want to write fic for them but I need an idea first and also I am slow and need to start/write my ddsherman fic. So maybe in January? haha)

Yeah. I'll probably run it by you once it's in any kind of shape. Someday there might even be fucking. So far it's like 1.5k of set up and they're not even in the hotel room yet.

I think that as long as you reasonably set up why any deviations in their voices might happen (ex: injuries, PTSD, etc.) the reader will be willing to go with you wherever you want to lead. There's some fic out there in various fandoms that I dearly love and the characters in it have wandered pretty far from their on-screen/on-page characterization but I like it because they've given me enough background to understand how those changes might have occurred within the realm of possibility.

Yeah, dealing with multiple layers of setting/time/ability change is messing me up, but they're about to fuck, so maybe my problems will go away.
